Introduction to Windows

10 Hours

Description: Participants of this course will explore the world of computing in a Windows environment. This course will develop the skills necessary to manoeuvre within any Windows-based operating system and will allow participants to become familiar with its many features.

Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants:

  1. Will become familiar with the vocabulary associated with computers and the Windows operating system.
  2. Will have developed the skills associated with manipulating the mouse.
  3. Will be able to apply what they have learned to other computer programs.
  4. Will be able to use the software that is bundled with Windows.
  5. Will be able to manoeuvre within a Windows environment.
  6. Will be able to organize computer files.
  7. Will have developed some rudimentary word processing skills.
  8. Will be able to customize the appearance of their computers.

Schedule: (Subject to change):

Lesson 1: Introduction, the machine, the desktop, the mouse, windows.
Lesson 2: Menus, Start button, Settings, Help.
Lesson 3: Word Processing, often used functions, Find.
Lesson 4: Creation of folders, saving to folders, organization.
Lesson 5: Windows Explorer, moving/copying files, creating shortcuts.


Materials:

A brief overview of the lesson will be provided in a handout during each session.

Introduction to Internet and Email

6 Hours

Description:

Participants of this course will explore the world of the Internet. This course will develop the skills necessary to search for information and communicate with others.

Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants:

  1. Will be able to select a search engine that will meet their needs.
  2. Will be able to select appropriate search terms.
  3. Will be able to manoeuvre within environment of Internet Explorer.
  4. Will be able to send and receive email.
  5. Will be aware of Internet issues: spam, fraud, security.

Schedule: (Subject to change):

Lesson 1: Working with the mouse, entering names of websites, entering information, performing searches.
Lesson 2: Adding favorites/bookmarks, setting the home page, advanced searching, different resources.
Lesson 3: Setting up an email account, sending and reading email (attachments), address book.

Introduction to Microsoft Word

 10 Hours

Description: Participants of this course will explore the world of word processing -- the creation of visually appealing documents. This course will develop the skills necessary to design and print a variety documents and will allow participants to become familiar with the many features of Microsoft Word.

Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants:
  1. Will become familiar with the vocabulary associated with Microsoft Word.
  2. Will be able to create a new Word document using a template.
  3. Will be able to open and edit an existing document.
  4. Will understand the different options associated with saving and printing.
  5. Will be able to adjust the page setup.
  6. Will be able to jazz up their documents with graphics and borders.
  7. Will learn about file extensions.
  8. Will develop file management skills.

Lesson 1: Introduction, capabilities of Microsoft Word, menus, New, Save, Print.
Lesson 2: Help, Open, spelling, Cut/Copy/Paste, appearance, alignment.
Lesson 3: Tables, graphics, borders, page numbering, word count.
Lesson 4: Bullets and numbering, the ruler, columns, headers/footers.
Lesson 5: Creation of folders, saving to folders, organization.

Introduction to Microsoft Excel

8 Hours

Description:

Participants of this course will learn the the basics of Microsoft Excel, right from the beginning. Learn how to manoeuvre in a worksheet, format, create charts, sort information, and apply basic formulas.

Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants:

  1. Will learn to navigate a worksheet.
  2. Will be able to create charts, tables, and graphs.
  3. Will be able to copy and paste cells.
  4. Will be able to add borders and shading.
  5. Will learn how to calculate basic formulas.
  6. Will learn how to sort information.

Lesson 1: Navigating, entering data, cutting/pasting, resizing, saving, page setup, printing.
Lesson 2: Borders, shading, gridlines, sorting.
Lesson 3: Multiple worksheets, graphs.
Lesson 4: Hide/unhide, grouping, basic formulas.

A Microsoft Trio - A Beginner's Look at
Microsoft Word, Excel, & PowerPoint

12 Hours

Description:

Participants of this course will learn the the basics of Microsoft Word (word processing), Microsoft Excel (spreadsheet), and Microsoft PowerPoint (presentation software). As well as creating documents, students will become aware of similarities of Microsoft programs.

Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants:

  1. Will be able to format documents.
  2. Will be able to incorporate clipart and charts into their documents.
  3. Will be able to navigate menus.
  4. Will be able to relate functions in one program to those in another.
  5. Will know some of the vocabulary associated with the Internet.
  6. Will be able to create a lively presentation.

Lesson 1: Introduction. Microsoft Word: cutting/pasting, formatting, saving, page setup, printing, spelling
Lesson 2: Microsoft Word cont.'d: graphics, tables, text boxes, borders, shading, bullets
Lesson 3: Microsoft Excel: functions of, navigating, simlarities, entering data, cutting/pasting, sorting
Lesson 4: Microsoft Excel cont.'d: changing formats, hide/unhide, basic formulas, gridlines, formating, graphs
Lesson 5: Microsoft PowerPoint: basics & similarities, choosing layout, colour and backgrounds, animations, graphics, viewing notes.
