Researching in the Archives

• Textual Fonds, Collections and Manuscripts:
  All fonds and collections of the Archives are accessible through the JPL's online catalogue. To search the catalogue, enter the name of the collection or person in which you are interested in the subject search field. If an Archives collection exists under that name, the search return will list the call number as ML ARCHIVES. By entering this record and examining the holdings notes, you may review the box or file listing of the collection.
  
  
  NOTE:
  The Archives has numerous small collections that are not available through the catalogue. Additionally, larger collections or new acquisitions may not be up-dated in the catalogue. It is important to always contact the Archives directly for full information on collections.
  
  
• Photographs and Posters:
  To access the photographs and posters, you must contact the Archives directly. The Archives can provide scanning and copying service for a usage fee. Users are also required to complete a use agreement. Contact the Archives for more information regarding the use of images.
  
  
• Microfilms:
  The Archives can provide researchers microfilm and microfilm printing access in our facilities. Our collection of microfilms is accessible through JPL's online catalogue.
  
  
  
• Jewish Canadiana Collection:
  
The Jewish Public Library has an extensive collection of newspaper clippings, magazine and journal articles and ephemera concerning topics of Jewish Canadiana. The collection is organized under specific persons, events, organizations, businesses and general subject areas. The Jewish Canadiana Collection is a valuable collection for any student or researcher just starting to study certain topics. The Collection is accessible by searching the JPL's online catalogue.

Guidelines for Using the Archives

1. The Archives are open to all interested members of the public during our regular business hours. Due to space restrictions, we prefer to be notified ahead of time of any visitors.
   
   
2. The Archives provides workspace within our facilities for researchers.
   
   
3. Archival material cannot be circulated.
   
   
4. The Archives provides gloves for researchers handling delicate documents or photographs.
   
   
5. Photocopying and scanning of documents and images is permitted at the discretion of the Archives. A nominal fee is applied for these services. The Archives conforms to all Canadian copyright laws.
   
   
6. We welcome sharing our records but we ask that researchers remember the fragility of these archival holdings. Be conscious of loose sleeves, remember that ink should not be used around the records at any time and that food and drink is prohibited in the Archives.
   
   

E-mail Requests

The Archives is pleased to accept requests for information by e-mail, telephone or visits to our facilities. The Archives staff endeavours to answer questions as thoroughly and quickly as possible. Contact the Archives.
