This Week in JPL History: Come on, let’s celebrate

This flyer advertised the 2006 Gala with Robert Adams

For many years the JPL hosted an annual Gala fundraising event. Each Gala would feature a performer who would host the evening and would be held in honour of a supporter or supporters of the Library. The evening would be an opportunity for the Library to publically thank its supporters for their work in ensuring the continuation of the Library.

In 2008 the Gala was hosted by Rick Mercer, the best-known Canadian political satirist, and honoured Rosalind and Morris Goodman. The event was a smashing success, with a large and enthusiastic crowd in attendance. That year the Goodmans gifted the JPL-Archives with a digitization centre.

2005 was a stand-out year as the host and the honouree were one in the same, Robert Adams, the noted Welsh-born book reviewer. He began reviewing books in 1994 and it was at the JPL in 2010 that Adams gave his last review. Individual book reviews were not all that Adams did at the Library, he often participated in discussions at the JPL, often with Lauren B. Davis, a Montreal-born writer. He also gave a lecture on Adele Wiseman in 1993. The 2005 Gala honoured him for his contribution to the Canadian literary scene.

The This Week in Jewish Public Library History blog series was made possible through the generous support of the Peter and Ellen Jacobs Virtual Archives Fund
