Warm Welcome to the Sam Gesser Blog!

By Janice

Beginning in the late 1950s, the man behind hundreds of the most spectacular, memorable, often groundbreaking and sometimes controversial performances of music, dance, theatre and comedy held on Montreal’s best known stages was Samuel Gesser. The man who expanded the famous and influential Folkways record label into Canada, adding to dozens of well-loved or barely known performers of distinctly Canadian forms of folk music to their roster, was Samuel Gesser. Later in life, the same man continued to express his love of live entertainment through the writing and production of original plays for stage and screen.

This section of the Jewish Public Library Archives blog will include posts to keep you informed about progress on the Gesser fonds. It also gives us the opportunity to share some hand-picked images from among those scanned as part of ongoing digitzation work, and to offer some informal commentary on the contents of the fonds further to what you can learn from the archival finding aid, which can be accessed here: http://www.jewishpubliclibrary.org/media/content/File/FAGesser.pdf

It’s a pleasure to be assigned responsibility for this blog at it’s outset. I am soon to graduate from the McGill School of Information Studies with a MLIS with a speciality in archiving. I’m working on this fonds as part of a practicum project under the attentive guidance of JPL-A archivist Shannon Hodge.

My next few posts will offer basic information about the career of Sam Gesser. I’ll also discuss what makes this acquisition a special one, and let you know what we’re specifically working on with his fonds here at the JPL-A.
