What’s Happening with the Sam Gesser Fonds?

By Janice

The JPL-A catalogue is set to go online later this summer, marking a significant increase in accessibility to its holdings. In preparation, a handful of folks here, myself included, have been engaging in marathon database maintenance sessions in order to get the contents of text-based finding aids into the system.

None of the files listed on the 2006 finding aid been previously entered. Actually, there are a few containers that still need to be opened and inventoried. This should be remedied in the next few weeks, but it reminds me to make an important point: archives often have more stuff than has been documented, so if you found your way here because you are doing research, please don’t be shy about getting in touch.

The Gesser fonds includes a lot of contracts, correspondence, press clippings, concert handbills and whatnot related to performing artists that did business with Sam Gesser Productions or Folkways, so I’m also updating the subject thesaurus to make it easier to search for material using names of artists as well as some broad topical words like “Dance”.
