New Immigrants

By Israel Medres

The new immigrants of the post-war period adapted more quickly to the life of the community. As a matter of fact, they found a much better organized Jewish community in Montreal. Philanthropic, political, and cultural organizations and institutions were already in place. Since 1916 most philanthropic organizations had been united under the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies. There was also a large Jewish library and a sizeable group of intellectuals, writers, and poets. Zionist and other Jewish nationalist organizations were very active.
