Monument National

Montreal was always an important centre for Yiddish plays. There were years when Yiddish productions were mounted every night of the week. All the stars of the American Yiddish theatre performed at the Monument National Theatre on Main Street near Dorchester. All the plays written for the Yiddish stage from dramas to comedies were presented there. Not one reputable actor or actress and not a single important Yiddish play failed to appear in Montreal. Even though Yiddish plays were stage in other buildings such as the one on La Gauchetière Street near Main, or the large theatre on St. Catherine near St. Dominque, or a building on Main Street near Prince Arthur, the main theatre of Jewish Montreal was the Monument National Theatre.
