“China through Yiddish Eyes”

China filled the pages of Yiddish poetry, fiction and journalism in the first half of the twentieth century. Kathryn Hellerstein considers two Yiddish translations of Chinese poems published in the nineteen twenties, connecting 8th century classical Chinese poet Li Bai to a 20-something year old Jewish immigrant in New York.

Dr. Kathryn Hellerstein is an Associate Professor of Germanic Languages at the University of Pennsylvania. A poet, translator, and scholar of Yiddish poetry, she is currently working on the book China through Yiddish Eyes: Translating Culture in the Early Twentieth Century.
