ISRAEL FILM FESTIVAL - Schedule and Information for 3 movies

Israeli Film Premiere II - Hebrew with English subtitles, 99 min.
"The Galilee Eskimos" (2006) - A film by Jonathan Paz. Script by Joshua Sobol

SATURDAY, JANUARY 12, 2008 AT 8:00 p.m.

An old, debt-ridden Galilee Hills kibbutz faces bankruptcy at the hands of its bankers. The evening before the bailiffs arrive, the settlers abandon their homes, leaving nothing and no one behind...or so it seems. The next morning, the kibbutz's senior-home residents discover they've been left to fend for themselves. Depressed at first, they begin to organize themselves and rebuild their kibbutz. Of course, the bank-financed contractor who eventually shows up may have other ideas...ones which surely don't
include them.

The Galilee Eskimos is a film about older people who discover an inner strength that their families and society - maybe even
themselves - didn't think they had.

Introduced by Hannah Eliashiv, Assistant Director of Education, Judaic Studies, Bialik High School.

Israeli Film Premiere III - Hebrew with English subtitles, 131 min.
"Year Zero" (2006) A film by Joseph Pitchhadze

SATURDAY, JANUARY 19, 2008, AT 8:00 P.M

Past and present circumstances bring together several seemingly different Tel Aviv residents. Forty-something radio producer Michal and her partner Reuben, a landlord, argue over an unexpected pregnancy. Angered and put-on Reuben accidentally runs over a seeing-eye dog - and his guilty feelings propel him into a complicated relationship with Eddie, the dog's owner. It may be a coincidence - or not - that young single mother Anna and her 10-year old son are thrown out of their rented apartment. In
despair, she briefly resorts to prostitution. Her main client is the boss of Michal and Kagan, a solitary, introverted radio engineer developing an oral history of Israeli punk rock who meets Robinson, his father's former bandmate who might have some old scores to settle; just like Matti, an arms dealer trying to escape his recent past. When the future always seems
uncertain...it always takes place in Year Zero.

Introduced by Dov Okouneff, Montreal filmmaker.
