Movie Presentation in Hebrew with English subtitles, 50 minutes
“It Sounds Better in Yiddish” by Avida Livny (Israel 2004)
Introduced by Rivka Augenfeld
This film, featuring comedians Dzigan and Shumacher, showcases the complex relationship in Israel among Yiddish, yiddishkeyt, and Hebrew, as well as the process of merging Yiddish and Israeli humor. Dzigan and Schumacher began their careers in Lodz in the late 1920s and with the outbreak of World War II fled to the Soviet Union, where they were imprisoned in Siberia; they subsequently immigrated to Israel in 1950.

A talk with the author David Solway
“Living in the Valley of Shmoon”
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 2008 AT 5:30 P.M.
David Solway’s most recent book of poetry is The Properties of Things. A previous volume, Reaching for Clear, won the 2007 A.M. Klein Prize for Poetry awarded by the Quebec Writers’ Federation. An earlier volume, Franklin’s Passage, was awarded “Le Grand Prix du Livre de Montréal” in 2004. Appointed poet-in-residence at Concordia University for 1999-2000, he is currently an associate editor with Books in Canada.
David Solway will reflect on the nature and reception of his political treatise The Big Lie: On Terror, Antisemitism, and Identity, published in 2007 by Lester, Mason & Begg/Random House. He is now at work on a follow-up volume entitled Living in the Valley of Shmoon, and a new book of politically inspired poetry, New Wine, Old Bottles, which he will also discuss in the context of the ideological war currently being waged against the Jewish state.
Introduced by Barbara Kay, National Post columnist.
Books and autographs available.

Alain Grasset (Le Parisien)

Movie presentation in French with English subtitles, 88 min.
“Mauvaise foi” (Bad Faith), directed by Roschdy Zem
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 2008 AT 7:30 P.M.
Clara is Jewish, Ismaël is Arab. Together they’re a happy, open-hearted couple…
This is a truly magnificent film that tells how Jewish-Muslim unity can thrive – and how war is not the sole inevitability – even in a world of conflict.
It’s a romantic comedy with undeniable charm, and a welcome message of tolerance in an era of alienation between different communities.
It’s a movie so true-to-life that you feel as if you know the main characters…and that they might know you too.
Introduced by Sophie Jama, Chair, French Cultural Committee of the JPL. A discussion will follow the screening.
In collaboration with l’Alliance Israélite Universelle.

Movie presentation in German with English subtitles, 110 min.
“Before the Fall”, directed by Dennis Gansel
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 2008 AT 7:30 P.M.
Set during World War II, this movie follows German teenagers who attend a napola – a special institution for gifted boys that turns them into the Nazi elite as they become ruthless servants of the Fuhrer.
While exploring such broad notions as the unravelling of compassion and the corruptive nature of nationalism, this film is also a love story about two young people who just happen to be positioned at a major crossroads in global affairs.
This movie received numerous Best film and Best Actor awards.
Introduced by Dr. Karin Doerr, Dept. of Classics, Modern Languages and Linguistics, Concordia University.
In collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Montreal. Vin d’honneur offered by the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Hebrew Theatre Workshop of the Jewish Public Library under the chairmanship of Nitza Parry proudly presents its 7th production
“Village” by Yehoshua Sobol, directed by Yael Feingold - in Hebrew with English supertitles
SUNDAY, MARCH 30, 2008 AT 2:30 P.M. AND 7:30 P.M.
On the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel, “Village” offers a look at its early history through the eyes and ears of Yossi, a naïve adolescent who never grows up. The play’s themes are both universal and specific to the Yishuv, the Jewish community living in Eretz Israel prior to the State’s founding. They are also as timely today as they were 6 decades ago: life in the shadow of a World War and the Holocaust, tradition versus secularism, and the sacrifices that the Jewish State demands of its people.
