Franciscus Sweertus (Magus Hieronimus)
Sweertius was a prominent citizen of Antwerp. The edition is printed in Greek-Latin parallel text.
This is a rare work about bells, written during his time in Turkish prisons, where he was incarcerated due to his participation in the movement for the liberation of Cyprus. The illustrations show bells in various uses (in music and in liturgy as well as in prisons), including the construction design of a Carillon (glockenspiel) and an elephant with a bell around his neck. It was originally published in 1608; the second work on torture first appeared in 1609. In 1664 an enlarged edition was published by Andreras Frisius in Amsterdam.
